Best route for climbing Kilimanjaro?

Once you’ve decided to embark on an Amazing Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure, the next big decision is which route to take. There are seven routes to the summit, each differing in length, difficulty, scenery, traffic, accommodation, and more. Based on our experience, we recommend considering one of the top three routes for your Amazing Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure:

Machame Route

One of the most popular due to its variety and scenic beauty, this route takes you from lush rainforest to the stunning Shira Plateau and rocky lava slopes. The trail circles around the mountain, offering spectacular views. A key benefit is the gradual ascent, allowing more time to acclimatize and boosting the success rate. The Machame route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is known for its moderate to high success rate, especially with a 7-day itinerary. Although it’s less expensive than some alternatives, it can be quite busy.

Lemosho Route

Known for its breathtaking and diverse scenery, the Lemosho route is less crowded than some of the more established paths. While more expensive, it provides ample time for proper acclimatization. The route is remote and stunning, with a high success rate for climbers aiming for an Amazing Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure.

Marangu Route

The second most popular and the least expensive route, Marangu is unique in that it uses the same trail for both the ascent and descent, offering hut accommodations (no camping). Nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route,” it’s considered one of the easier routes, though it’s also the shortest. However, it provides less time to acclimatize, resulting in a lower success rate. Marangu is less scenic and can get crowded during peak season, but it still offers a rewarding Amazing Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure.

Northern Circuit Route

The longest and one of the most scenic routes, the Northern Circuit offers amazing views from all sides of Kilimanjaro. Its length allows plenty of time for acclimatization, which boosts the summit success rate. Perfect for those who want to experience the full beauty of the mountain, this route is great for those with the time and budget for an Amazing Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure.

Shira Route

A scenic but challenging and expensive route. It’s best suited for experienced climbers due to the high starting point, which limits acclimatization time.

Rongai Route

This route, for more experienced climbers, starts on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. With the ascent and descent on opposite sides, climbers get to see both sides of the mountain. The route is quieter but drier and less scenic, and the additional transport costs make it more expensive, but still provides a unique Amazing Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure.

Umbwe Route

The steepest of the Kilimanjaro routes, this path has a much lower success rate due to its rapid ascent. Only experienced climbers accustomed to high altitudes should attempt this route for an Amazing Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure

Best time to climb Kilimanjaro

You can climb Kilimanjaro year-round, but the ideal conditions are between June and mid-March, excluding November. February is considered the best month, with higher temperatures and low chances of rainfall. The rainy season typically runs from mid-March to June, as well as in November. However, some people opt to climb in April or November, as these months are quieter with fewer crowds on the trails.
